History of the Plymouth Colony

History of the Plymouth Colony Established in December 1620 in what is now the U.S. State of Massachusetts, the Plymouth Colony was the first permanent settlement of Europeans in New England and the second in North America, coming just 13 years after the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. While perhaps best known as the source of the tradition of Thanksgiving, the Plymouth Colony introduced the concept of self-government into America and serves as the source of important clues to what being an â€Å"American† really means. The Pilgrims Flee Religious Persecution In 1609, during the reign of King James I, members of the English Separatist Church - the Puritans - emigrated from the England to the town of Leiden in the Netherlands in a futile attempt to escape religious persecution. While they were accepted by the Dutch people and authorities, the Puritans continued to be persecuted by the British Crown. In 1618, English authorities came to Leiden to arrest congregation elder William Brewster for distributing flyers critical of King James and the Anglican Church. While Brewster escaped arrest, the Puritans decided to place the Atlantic Ocean between them and England. In 1619, the Puritans obtained a land patent to establish a settlement in North America near the mouth of the Hudson River. Using money loaned to them by the Dutch Merchant Adventurers, the Puritans - soon to be Pilgrims - obtained provisions and passage on two ships: the Mayflower and the Speedwell. The Voyage of the Mayflower to Plymouth Rock After the Speedwell was found to be unseaworthy, 102 Pilgrims, led by William Bradford, crowded aboard the 106-foot-long Mayflower and set sail for America on September 6, 1620. After two difficult months at sea, land was sighted on November 9 off the coast of Cape Cod. Prevented from reaching its initial Hudson River destination by storms, strong currents, and shallow seas, the Mayflower finally anchored off Cape Cod on November 21. After sending exploratory party ashore, the Mayflower docked near Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts on December 18, 1620. Having sailed from the port of Plymouth in England, the Pilgrims decided to name their settlement Plymouth Colony. The Pilgrims Form a Government While still aboard the Mayflower, all of the adult male Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact. Similar to the U.S. Constitution ratified 169 years later, the Mayflower Compact described the form and function of Plymouth Colony’s government. Under the Compact, the Puritan Separatists, although a minority in the group, were to have total control over the colony’s government during its first 40 years of existence. As leader of the Puritans congregation, William Bradford was chosen to serve as Plymouth’s governor for 30 years after its founding. As governor, Bradford also kept a fascinating, detailed journal known as â€Å"Of Plymouth Plantation† chronicling the voyage of the Mayflower and the daily struggles of the settlers of the Plymouth Colony. A Grim First Year in the Plymouth Colony Over the next two storms forced many of the Pilgrims to stay aboard the Mayflower, ferrying back and forth to shore while building shelters to house their new settlement. In March 1621, they abandoned the safety of the ship and moved ashore permanently. During their first winter, more than half of the settlers died of a disease that afflicted the colony. In his journal, William Bradford referred to the first winter as the â€Å"Starving Time.† â€Å" †¦ being the depth of the winter, and wanting houses and other comforts; being infected with the scurvy and other diseases which this long voyage and their inaccommodate condition had brought upon them. So there died some times two or three of a day in the foresaid time, that of 100 and odd persons, scarce fifty remained.† In stark contrast to the tragic relationships that were to come during America’s western expansion, the Plymouth colonists benefited from a friendly alliance with local Native Americans. Shortly after coming ashore, the Pilgrims encountered a Native American man named Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe, who would come to live as a trusted member of the colony. Early explorer John Smith had kidnapped Squanto and taken him back to England where he was forced into slavery. He learned English before escaping and sailing back to his native land. Along with teaching the colonists how to grow the vitally-needed native food crop of maize, or corn, Squanto acted as an interpreter and peacekeeper between Plymouth’s leaders and local Native American leaders, including Chief Massasoit of the neighboring Pokanoket tribe. With the help of Squanto, William Bradford negotiated a peace treaty with Chief Massasoit which helped ensure the Plymouth Colony’s survival. Under the treaty, the colonists agreed to help protect the Pokanoket from invasion by warring tribes in return for the Pokanoket’s help â€Å"to grow food and catch enough fish to feed the colony. And help the Pilgrims grow and catch the Pokanoket did, to the point that in the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims and the Pokanoket famously shared the first harvest feast now observed as the Thanksgiving holiday. The Legacy of the Pilgrims After playing a major role in King Philip’s War of 1675, one of several Indian Wars fought by Britain in North America, the Plymouth Colony and its residents prospered. In 1691, just 71 years after the Pilgrims first set foot on Plymouth Rock, the colony was merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony and other territories to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Unlike the settlers of Jamestown who had come to North America seeking financial profit, most of the Plymouth colonists had come seeking the freedom of religion denied to them by England. Indeed, the first cherished right ensured to Americans by the Bill of Rights is the â€Å"free exercise† of every individual’s chosen religion. Since its founding in 1897, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants has confirmed more than 82,000 descendants of the Plymouth Pilgrims, including nine U.S. presidents and dozens of notable statespersons and celebrities. Besides Thanksgiving, the legacy of the relatively short-lived Plymouth Colony lies in the Pilgrims’ spirit of independence, self-government, volunteerism, and resistance to authority that have stood as the foundation of American culture throughout history.

Renewable vs Nonrenewable Resources The United States has 4% of the world's people, but as a country consumes 25% of the world's oil. The U.S. and Western Europe are obsessed with a standard of living that is reliant on energy consumption maintained by the burning of fossil fuels. These nonrenewable resources continue to be depleted, despite the fact that solar power, wind power, hydropower, biomass, and many other renewable resources are available and accessible. The switch to these renewables would stop the extensive pumping of CO2 and other pollutants into the air we breathe. Acid rain, oil spills and global climate change and other environmental disasters might have a chance to abate. In addition to the impact on our health and the health of the planet, fossil fuel dependence has other potentially disastrous implications. Equally disturbing as the environmental consequences for oil-dependent Western economies is the fact that, in the near future, more than half of the planet's petroleum reserves will be owned and controlled by a handful of countries in the politically unstable Middle East. This will mean, and has arguably meant in the recent past (Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom), that the United States military will go into these Middle Eastern countries to ensure management of oil resources are in line with U.S. corporate desires. This dependence and the resulting imperialism seem silly and completely unnecessary when there are other types of sustainable resources here, at home. Our company, Duetsche computers, has been using retail marketing since its inception in 1985. We want to thank you all the retailers for the commitment you have shown to our company for all that time, to make it a leading supplier of computers and accessories. As you all know, the global market is changing very fast and for us to keep up with our competitors, we need to make several changes. We began by changing our technology and installed more efficient production machine. However, this has not helped to keep us ahead of our competitors. There are so many companies that are eating slowly into our market segment. This is why the company commissioned a research on our marketing strategy, comparing it with the global trend and we have found that we need to change it. From the result that we gathered in our research, most companies have preferred direct marketing as compared to retail marketing. It has come to our realization that we need to know our business well since we know our competitors. Direct marketing is the answer to modern marketing. It is not that we want to sideline our retailers who have supported us for all that time but it’s because we have to answer to the market needs. Marketing is becoming more direct, highly focused and interactive. Direct marketing is more personalized and aimed at individual markets rather than to the mass i.e. aimed at micro markets, who are the customers. According to Andrew R. et al. (2006), direct marketing remains the most effective channel for providing customers with personalized marketing that they prefer. We have found retail marketing very costly to us, and in the end we have been passing that cost to the consumers. This cost is increased by the inventory cost and ware housing cost. We have not been fixing prices for our electronic products and most of you have been selling at different prices. This has placed us at a disadvantage since competing companies sell their products at a uniform price throughout the country. We have also found that, most companies are making the product to consumer specification and that is the direction we want to take. We want to start making customized items as per the customer specification.   We have found it necessary to adopt a production model bases on the model of ‘Just-in-time, build-to-order’ as put forward by James Fulkerson (2003) of Dell Company – United States. This will help us to include new technology to orders placed by the customers. However, we are not to get into marketing alone. We want you to partner with us. We want you to move from you shops and establish a web-based shop. In turn we are going to establish a highly efficient sales team in our marketing department. You shall do the advertising of the product and then customers shall make orders to you. However we shall also partner in advertisement but for us at the company level and you at the distributor level.   The customers shall place order to you and you shall forward your order to the company with the required specification.   We can guarantee to you that, your orders shall be ready with the first five days of placing. The customer should have the orders delivered within the first 7 to 10 days. You shall be paid 8% commission for every delivery you make. This is surely a better method of improving our company sales and in advance your business sales. However it needs all of us to start working serious to maintain the market segment that we have acquired and that is a sure way to move about it. His grandmother was his life, but when he was seven years old she took him to live on a plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd. Which separated him from his family, brothers and sisters? â€Å"Being a slave made them strangers.† Pg(48) he wrote that he was told that his master was his â€Å"father†. When he describes his younger years on the plantation his mother died and his aunt ester was whipped. When he was a bit older he lived in Baltimore he had a new master Hugh Auld who was a ship carpenter. Fredrick says that he was treated like a pig on the plantation. His master’s wife was teaching him how to read and when his master found out he wanted it stopped immediately. He thought that slaves should know nothing.In the chapters 13-20 at the age of 15 is when he fially escapes freedom. â€Å"One trouble over, and on comes another,† Douglass says â€Å"The slave’s life is full of uncertainty† (pg 170 his particular period of uncertainty begins wit h the death of Captain Anthony, who, Douglass notes, had remained his master â€Å"in fact, and in law,† though he had become â€Å"in form the slave of Master Hugh. Captain Anthony’s death necessitates a division of his human â€Å"property,† and soon afterwards, Hugh Auld sends Douglass to work at his brother Thomas’s plantation ). When Master Thomas finds that severe whippings do not cause â€Å"any visible improvement in [Douglass’] character,† he hires the young slave out to Edward Covey, who is reputed to be â€Å"a first rate hand at breaking young negroes† (pg 203).. The oxen run away, and Covey punishes Douglass harshly. But Douglass does not intend to be broken either, and his year with Covey culminates in a violent fistfight with the overseer. In 1835, Douglass leaves Covey to work for William Freeland, â€Å"a well-bred southern gentleman,† noting that â€Å"he was the best master I ever had, until I became my own master† (pgs 258-268). After an uneventful year, Douglass devises his first escape plan, conspiring with five other young male slaves (pg 279). However, their scheme is detected, Douglass is imprisoned for a time, and finally Thomas Auld sends him back to live with Hugh (pg 303).While working in a Baltimore shipyard as a hired laborer, Douglass is savagely beaten and nearly killed by four white ship  carpenters. Nevertheless, the job allows Douglass to save some money, finally enabling him to make his escape in September 1838. Douglass does not reveal the full details of his escape in My Bondage and My Freedom, fearing that he might â€Å"thereby [prevent] a brother in suffering [from escaping] the chains and fetters of slavery† (p.323). (He narrates his escape in Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, published well after emancipation). Instead, Douglass skips to his first impressions of life in New York: â€Å"less than a week after leaving Baltimore, I was walking amid the hurrying throng, and gazing upon the dazzling wonders of Broadway† (p. 336)Chapter 24 describes Douglass’ tumultuous Atlantic crossing on a ship full of slave-owners, his exploits as a traveling lecturer in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and the â€Å"many dear friends† abroad who collaborate to purchase Douglass’s freedom from Thomas Auld in 1846 (p 373). Chapter 25 recalls Dou glass’s plan to start a newspaper after returning to the United States, which he realizes with the help of his â€Å"friends in England† despite some unexpected resistance from his abolitionist â€Å"friends in Boston† (p 392-393). This difference of opinion was emblematic of a larger rift between Douglass and the followers of William Lloyd Garrison over various points of political philosophy. Determined to circulate his newspaper from a neutral location, Douglass begins printing The North Star in December 1847 and moves his family to Rochester, New York, in 1848. He concludes My Bondage and My Freedom with a revised mission statement: â€Å"to promote the moral, social, religious, and intellectual elevation of the free colored people . . . to advocate the great and primary work of the universal and unconditional emancipation of my entire race† (p 306)

Listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the Northern Spotted Owl has inadvertently landed in the in middle of the complicated debate over logging in the Pacific Northwest. Under the Act, logging of many old-growth forests has been suspended to protect the bird and its remaining habitat. Survival of the Northern Spotted Owl The Northern Spotted Owl can only live in old growth environment, it is considered an indicator species: The health of the Northern Spotted Owl population indicates the health of the old-growth forest ecosystem. An individual Northern Spotted Owl needs more than 3,000 acres of old growth to survive, because of its scarce food supply. The Northern Spotted Owl is found in the cool, moist woodlands on the Pacific Northwest. The habitat of the Northern Spotted Owl can be described as trees relatively large in diameter in the stand, multi-layered canopy, large tall live trees with cavities, broken tops, mistletoe, or platforms of branches capable of holding accumulated organic matter suitable for use as a nest, dead standing trees and fall ...

That rule is this: There’s only one 100% correct answer choice, and all the others can be eliminated without any ambiguity. Reasons for the Fundamental Rule In this section, I'll go over some background information on the rule and explain why it makes sense. Why Is There No Ambiguity in Answers on the SAT Reading Section? As you know, the SAT is a standardized test.Standardized tests market themselves as objective measures of academic skill; without this objectivity, they lose their relevance. Even a subject like reading, where answers are typically more subjective, must be tested using questions that have only one objectively correct answer.The test would be greatly weakened if people could challenge the questions all the time and argue convincingly that more than one answer could be correct. The College Board would have to throw out all the questions that were disputed, leaving them with less data to calculate scores and a reputation for unreliability. How Does the College Board Make Sure Ambiguity Never Happens? The answer to every reading question can be found directly in the text of the passage. Since the College Board can’t allow any room for interpretation,questions must find ways of restating information that’s already in the text. Questions might might use phrases like â€Å"most nearly means† or â€Å"is best described as† to trick you into thinking more ambiguously about the answers and giving too many of them a fair shot.Don’t let this happen to you!Always remember: ONE ANSWER CHOICE TO RULE THEM ALL. Types of Wrong Answers Let's go over the four types of incorrect answer choices you might see on the test and how to spot them! Sometimes, an answer will have two parts. If one part works and the other part doesn't, you still need to eliminate it! Make sure you look at both parts of the answer carefully and cross it out if you think either part doesn’t fit. Type #2: Opposite Even if you don’t know the exact answer to the question, you will be able to tell if relationships in the passage were reversed.These answer choices can be tricky because if you’re reading quickly, you might not catch that things are in the wrong order.That's why it’s so important to double check your answers! Type #3: Irrelevant or Concept Jumble Irrelevant answers can be tricky because they prey on students’ tendency to overthink the question and twist any choice into a plausible answer.If something seems unrelated to what you read, it’s wrong. Process of Elimination in Action: Sample Question Now let's take a look at a real SAT Reading question and figure out which three choices can be eliminated. Here's the section of the passage you'll need to read to answer the question: To give a bit of background, the passage as a whole is discussing the position of women in English society. It was written in 1938, soon after women began to join men in the workforce in large numbers. This question asks us to identify the purpose of lines 72-76 in the passage.Remember, we need to find concrete evidence for the answer we end up choosing. Upon reading these lines and the lines immediately afterwards, it appears that they are meant to emphasize the need for women to continue to critique the society they find themselves in even as more barriers to their full participation are lifted ("Where in short is it leading us, the procession of the sons of educated men?"). Now we can go through the choices and figure out which ones to cross out: Choice A: This is an example of a plausible interpretation answer. While it's true that the challege that women face at this period in time is a novel one, lines 72-76 do not exist specifically to emphasize that fact. Notice that there is no reference to the fact that this is a new challege either in those lines or in the rest of the paragraph. This choice can be eliminated. Choice B: This choice is promising. The lines emphasize critical reflection for women who are now joining male-dominated professions.The main point is that even as women join the professional ranks, they should continue to question the nature of the society as a whole. They should keep in mind that it is shaped by its long tradition of excluding women from the public sphere. As the author says, "Let us never cease from thinking - what is this civilization in which we find ourselves?" Choice C: This is another plausible interpretation answer that is just too broad to be the correct choice. The purpose of the lines is not specifically to emphasize the complexity of the political and social issues of the day, even if the fact of this complexity is brought to the forefront by the passage as a whole. We're looking for a more narrowly focused answer that deals specifically with the lines in the question. Choice D: This is an irrelevant answer that borders on an opposite answer. It misses the point of these lines entirely. They are not meant to emphasize the multitude of new career prospects for women. Rather, the passage encourages women not to step blindly into these new fields without examining why they do so and whether they should carry on the traditions of a society that originally took shape with their exclusion in mind. Ok, based on my notes about each answer, choices A, C, and D can all be eliminated. That means choice B must be the correct response! Choice B has direct evidence backing it up, and it matches our original interpretation of the lines perfectly. Let’s Review! The fundamental rule of SAT Reading is that there is only ONE absolutely correct answer choice, and the rest can be eliminated! There are two types of SAT Reading questions: passage-based questions and sentence completion questions. You can detect incorrect answer choices by watching for: Answers that contain extra information or are slightly off Answers that represent the opposite of the relationship described in the passage Answers that are irrelevant or are just a mish-mash of conceptsfound in the passage Answers that are plausible interpretations of the passage, but are not supported by any direct evidence As long as you remember that the correct answer must restate something in the passage, you should be able to eliminate three out of four answer choices on most Reading questions and end up with a great score! A physical examination became done and found out that she had high temperatures of 38. 2 degrees Celsius. His mother also added in Seth’s history that the boy had difficulties in sleeping due to the high temperatures thereby improvising to sleeping on wet towels in order to control his body temperature. In addition, the nurse explained to the parents the importance of a CD4 count test. Later a test became done and found the boy’s CD4 count to be 300 cells per microliters (Kathy & Stolley 2009, p. 34). Seth became hospitalized in the paediatric ward in order to manage her allergic rash following Septrin use. The nurse admitted the patient and later took the child and a room where his parent’s would constantly visit him.
